The Life of Saint Anastasios: the young man went to Pray alone in the Church. Seeing scenes of the Martyrs depicted on the walls there, he experienced the ardent desire of finding the same perfection for himself by the sacrifice of his blood… After receiving the Monastic Tonsure, he laboured for seven years with ever increasing zeal at the purification of his Soul and in the service of the brethren. He fulfilled concurrently the obediences of cook and of gardener, and was always early for the Church Services, when he would listen attentively and with tears to the details of the Lives of the Saints and of the exploits of the Martyrs, Praying secretly that God would make him also worthy of the Victor’s Palm…
