When Saint Juliana the all-Blessed watched as the all-Glorious Martyr Barbara contested for Christ in the dreadful stadium, as she was being whipped, and her body was broken by elaborate tortures, longingly she cried aloud to You, O Logos of God, shedding ardent tears and exclaiming, “Benevolent Lord, I entreat You, grant that I may follow her in Martyrdom.”
Truly of the same mind were the two Martyrs, Juliana and Barbara, regarding piety. Sharing the true Faith, these women Saints competed against and defeated the enemy, and thus were accounted worthy to receive the Glory from the Lord, Christ God. Therefore they grant cures to the faithful and avert the hurt and destruction wreaked upon us by disease and suffering.
A Virtuous Christian woman named Saint Juliana was in the crowd where Saint Barbara was being tortured. Her heart was filled with sympathy for the voluntary Martyrdom of Saint Barbara, and Saint Juliana cried bitterly for her and she too wanted to suffer for Christ. She began to denounce the torturers in a loud voice. Then she bravely came up to the ruler and accused him of madness and cruelty. The ruler questioned her faith to which Saint Juliana said “I am a Christian.” Then the ruler ordered Saint Juliana to be tortured together with Saint Barbara for a long time, raking their bodies with hooks, and the Lord gave both these Holy ladies strength, courage and patience. The ruler Martianus then threw Saint Juliana into prison and ordered Saint Barbara to be led naked through the city, but Our Lord sent a bright Angel to cover up the Holy maiden’s nakedness with a splendid robe. They were then both beheaded.
